Inclusive and adapted basketball.
The CB Canarias Foundation took its first steps in inclusive and adapted basketball in July 2023, when, in collaboration with the Island Council, it organized its first camp of this kind at the Sergio Rodríguez Pavilion. It was so successful that it has been repeated ever since, with the model also being replicated during Christmas and Easter breaks. In August, the Hispano Inglés school in Santa Cruz also hosted another inclusive camp, this time with the support of Sinpromi.
In the 2023/2024 school year, CEIP Camino de la Villa was the first school where the Foundation, in this case in conjunction with the La Laguna City Council, launched an inclusive school as an extracurricular activity. The initiative proved so successful that it has since been implemented in other schools in La Laguna, Santa Cruz, and Icod de los Vinos: CEIP Ayatimas, CEIP Cardonal I, CEIP La Salud, CEIP Campino, CEIP Emeterio Gutiérrez Albelo, and CEIP Baldomero Bethencourt Francés.
Both on campuses and in schools, work has been done with children without disabilities and children with disabilities, as well as others in vulnerable situations.
In the 2024/2025 academic year, in collaboration with the Government of the Canary Islands, a further step was taken on this path with the project ‘Raising Awareness of Inclusive and Adapted Basketball,’ initiating a tour of schools across the island.
Activities have been developed for students and families. A team of coaches with disabilities (intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, motor disabilities, and physical disabilities) and coaches without disabilities has been available, as the Foundation is committed to promoting inclusion in the workplace as well.
The program has involved individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and intellectual disabilities, including users from APANATE and players from the ADDIN Fundación CB Canarias basketball team; individuals with hearing impairments, including users from Funcasor; and individuals with physical disabilities, including players from the Santa Cruz ADEIN Tenerife Fundación CB Canarias wheelchair basketball team and coaches from the CB Canarias youth teams.
Each day includes basketball stations. During some visits, the students also participate in the “Made in the Canary Islands” workshop, which promotes healthy lifestyle habits and is led by specialist Margui from Naturalmente.
